Hive, on Niddry Street between the Royal Mile and the Cowgate, is open 365 days a year and makes no claim to be cool. It has two dancefloors and plays chart hits, cheese and indie to a mostly student crowd. Trash, the Tuesday indie night, has free entry and £1 spirit mixers, and Cookie Wednesday is free with £1 shots.
Doors open at 22:00 on weekdays and 21:00 at the weekend, and the club closes at 03:00. During the August festival period and over Christmas and New Year it runs Hive Till Five and stays open until 05:00. Not for you if you want a curated line-up: people tend to love it or hate it, and the music is exactly what you expect.
