Six lantern-lit alleys in Kabukicho with more than 200 tiny bars, many seating about five. Cover charges of ¥500–1,000 are common.
Golden Gai is a block of six narrow alleys in Kabukicho, about ten minutes on foot from the east exit of Shinjuku Station, holding more than 200 tiny bars, clubs and eateries. Many seat only about five people and most buildings have two storeys. The area became a drinking district after 1958 and survived the 1980s land grabs because supporters guarded it at night.
Bars generally open from about 20:00 or 21:00. Covers of ¥500 to ¥1,000 (€3 to €6) are common: Albatross charges ¥500 with snacks, Kenzo's Bar ¥500 and Ace's nothing, and a few bars add far larger charges, so read the sign on the door. Some bars take regulars only, and photography in the alleys is restricted. Not for you if you want a table for a group: nothing here seats a crowd.
Walk-in. A few bars are regulars only, shown by signs in Japanese; the cover charge is posted on the door.
