G-A-Y Manchester is the northern sister of the London club, on Richmond Street in the Gay Village, a few steps from Canal Street. It is a pop club without apology: camp pop parties, themed weekends for pop icons, bingo, cabaret and singing contests, plus aftershow parties when big pop acts play in town. There is a rooftop terrace for smokers.
The bar opens at noon and the club runs from midnight until 04:00, and until 06:00 at the weekend. Entry is usually free, though some nights are members only, and the drink deals keep it cheap. It is busiest on Friday and Saturday after 22:00. Not for you if you want underground music or a polished room: it is loud, young and proudly cheesy.
