Brown café on the Vrijdagmarkt with more than 500 beers, where you hand over a shoe as deposit for the one-litre Max glass.

De Dulle Griet is a brown café on the Vrijdagmarkt with an old interior hung with cartwheels and the largest beer list in Ghent: more than 500 local and international beers. Its famous ritual is the Max, a litre of beer in a boot-shaped glass, which you get by handing over one of your shoes as a deposit. You get the shoe back when you return the glass.

It opens at 12:00 from Tuesday to Saturday and at 16:30 on Monday, closing at 01:00, and on Sunday it runs from 12:00 to 19:30. There is a terrace on the square in good weather and gluten-free options on the list. It is a first stop rather than a late one, with the Vlasmarkt a short walk away. Not for you if you want a quiet corner on a summer evening.
