Café on the Grote Markt since 1903, in one of the oldest buildings on the square, known for its bolleke of De Koninck.
Café Den Engel, at Grote Markt 3, has served since 1903 in one of the oldest buildings in the city, with a history that goes back to the 14th century. The room has kept its early 20th-century character, and it still feels like a local's café despite sitting on the most famous square in Antwerp, by the town hall. The drink to order is a bolleke: De Koninck, the city's own beer, in its round glass.
In good weather the terrace looks out over the market. Opening hours are not published on the café's site, so check before a late visit. It is the natural first round of a night in the old town. Not for you if you want music or cocktails: this is a beer café, and proud of it.
Walk-in café.
