Charlatan is the big bar on the Vlasmarkt, the square Visit Gent calls the epicentre of the city's nightlife. Practically every wall is covered in graffiti, and there is a dance floor, a seated bar and a terrace. The programme mixes gigs, comedy and DJ nights, from indie bands to early-evening parties such as Vroeg Pieken. Felix van Groeningen's film Belgica, about how a Ghent bar became the place everyone went, was filmed here.
It opens from 22:00, Tuesday to Saturday, and from 20:00 when there is a concert; it is closed on Sunday and Monday. Many nights are free, while ticketed parties cost around €16–22 and are 18+. Not for you if you want a polished club or room to move: it is a packed bar first and a club second.
